Sample questions for anecdote planning and telling

Anecdote 1. You are going to tell your partner about a time when you found yourself in one of the situations below. Choose one of the situations to talk about. Before you start to speak, look at the questions and think about what you're going to say and the language you're going to need to say it.

A change in plans

1.What had you planned? A holiday? A party? A career change? Something else?

2. Were you responsible for making the plans or did someone else do the planning?

3. How far ahead were the plans made? Was there a lot of planning involved?

4. What exactly was the original plan?

5. Were you looking forward to it?

6. What happened to force you to change your plans?

7. How did you react when your plans fell through?

8. Did you do something else instead? Do you think that it turned out for the best in the end?

9. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

 

Anecdote 2. A time when things didn't live up to expectations

1. What was the occasion? A holiday? A party? A new job? A date? Something else?

2. What had you expected to happen?

3. Why were you looking forward to it?

4.What actually happened? In what way did it not live up to your expectations?

5. Did you feel angry? Upset? Annoyed?

6. Did you complain?

7. Was anyone to blame?

8. Do you think that maybe your expectations were a little unrealistic?

9. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

 

Tell your story to your partner and give as much detail as possible.

Story one transcript: original version

Ok , My story was one year ago…erm…I have a friend who works in Cuba, La Habana, in fact I have a friend who works there and he asked me to go there to work with him. Because he was working in a hotel in Melia, La Habana, and they need another account manager in La Habana Coimbra, I don't remember well the name of the hotel, the thing is that I was …I was very happy because it was a very good opportunity to work in Cuba. It's a Caribbean country and a good country to live. There are Caribbean girls and …you know! I went there and I was working there for one week, it was very hard because I was working for six days form 8 to 10 almost I couldn't know, visit La Habana city. I was always busy.

My story happened a year ago. At that time I had a friend working in La Habana, Cuba. He told me there was an account manager opening in the Coimbra Hotel. I was very happy because it would be a good opportunity to work there. It's a Caribbean country and a good place to live. And…there are Caribbean girls, you know! I went there to work for one week but it was very hard, non stop six days from 8 to 10. I was always busy so I couldn't visit La Habana.

Story two transcript: original version

This is a tragical story. Is a story of the day of the day of my eighteen birthday. My grandmother decided to give me a special gift and she wants me to remember this day for a lot of time, I think for all my life because I want never forget it. She want me to, I was going to celebrate my birthday but in an special place with a lot of friends, with the friends I wanted. I was near to invite 55 people or something like that, finally, they didn't come back, not all of them. And this day, at night, it would be the party but during the afternoon, I think some hours before my mother start to have an allergic reaction…
