Procedure


Introduction - Pronunciation
Establish aims and purpose.

Explain that we are going to look at ways to improve English pronunciation, and at the end of the class will discuss which approaches were enjoyable and/or useful.

Stage 1 - 5 languages
1st impressions (Activity 2 in Part 1
Appendix)

(Material 1 - tape) stds listen and identify 5 languages spoken by native-speakers.
stds listen again, and identify distinguishing features. Discuss in pairs and whole class.

Stage 2 - Questionnaire
(Adapted from Activity 1)

stds consider list of 4 questions (Material 2), then discuss in pairs, then whole class.

Stage 3 - Spanish in an English accent
Noticing (Activity 4)

stds write short biographies in Spanish (on model of Material 3), then read them to each other in an English accent.
Discuss distinguishing features of an English accent.

Stage 4 - Bilingual minimal pairs
(Adapted from Activity 7)

On the board write:

English                    Spanish
information                informacion
radio                        radio

Read out one of each pair, stds identify the language.
In pairs stds read each others' words from lists (Material 4) and identify the language.
Discuss differences between words' pronunciation.

Stage 5 - Mouth shape
(Activity 8, then 13)

(Material 5) with sound turned down. Identify and language spoken from clues in mouth shape and movement.
Discuss.

Stage 6 - Body language and voice-setting
Communication
(Activity 18)

Tape as before, then with sound.
stds decide the relationship between the speakers.

Stage 7 - Shadow reading
Imitation (9 adapted for video, leading
to a version of 10)

Tape as before with sound. Shadow reading the dialogue, the sound
gradually diminishing until the Ls can dub the original.

12 mins


Stage 8 - (depending on time)Words with feeling
Communication (Adapted from Activity 15)

stds say 'typical' English words and phrases (from stage 2) in the manner of particular emotions (Material 6)
Other Ls identify the emotion.

Stage 9 - Dialogues with feeling (Activity 16)

In pairs stds invent a context for a dialogue time) (Material 7) and act it out.
Other learners identify the context.

Stage 10 - Feedback and discussion
about approaches looked at in today's lesson.
