A teenager got more than he bargained for when he decided to test out the new euro currency at the Luton branch of Debenhams.

Richard Shields ended up with more than 130 worth of designer goods - by exchanging just 10 pocket money for 15 euros.

The 15 year old from Luton, cashed in when he realised that staff at his local Debenham's store, who were unfamiliar with the new currency, were unaware that the wrong exchange rate had been programmed into their tills.

Instead of an exchange rate of 1.6 euros to the pound, the Debenhams tills showed an exchange rate of 0.6 euros to the pound.

Richard eventually left the store with 130 worth of goods, plus 20 in cash and some left over euros due to the mix-up in exchange rates.

He told BBC Online: "I did try to tell the staff at the start that it was wrong but they said that was what the till was flashing up."

"I went backwards and forwards to the bank to exchange more money with the change I was given back from buying things with the euros."
