'Search Bar is a little program I created because I hated having to open a new browser window, go to a search engine site, wait for it to load and then do my search. Search Bar is a little window that sits on top of all your windows to give you quick access to many different search engines. It comes with 6 popular search engines (Altavista, Excite, Google, HotBot, Lycos, and Yahoo), but you can add almost any engine you want. You can minimize the program to an icon in the system tray for quick access to the Search Bar.' Patrick Deal

Kneel before General Zod! You basically have two choices - kneel before him and swear eternal loyalty to Zod or die by his hands for your defiance and treachery.
If you choose option 1, you will be saved. You will continue on with the rest of your life as his slave, forever. Keep in mind how much honor there is in devoting your life to serving your rightful leader, General Zod. Much honor indeed.
If you choose option 2, he will crush you with his bare hands. A most unsettling fate for you. He will also kill any small "pets" such as "puppies" that you have acquired.
Not too much of a choice really.

You should always base your decisions on nothing more than the desire to keep yourself in existence. Also, note that you should take each scenario presented to you at face value. The situation will be as described - there are no "tricks" - and you do not need to worry about other 'what ifs'. I'm sure you want to know when we last updated Developing Teachers.com, no? I learned this trick the other day. Open a text file - NotePad or the equivalent that you use & type in the following:

[InternetShortcut]
URL=javascript:alert(document.lastModified)

Then 'Save as' "last_modified.url" - without the quotes - in c:\windows\favorites.

When you are at a site, click on this in the favourites & it'll give you the date the page was last modified. Magic.

http://images.google.com/
Talking of magic - back to Google - my favourite search engine - & their lightning search that seems like magic. They have now incorporated an image search. This is a neat little toolbar, that sits on the left of the page, that shows you thumbnails of the sites that are in the search page, it shows thumbnails of all the links on a web page, it helps you save these thumbnails while surfing & it also helps you e-mail friends with these thumbnails instead of just the link! It's free & it works with Internet Explorer, versions 4 & higher. Nice idea - check it out.

http://www.e-2.org/word_perhect.html
'As word processing software becomes ever more advanced, with the ability to correct syntax and spelling errors, these familiar programmes begin to impose a standardised corporate language onto our writing - subtly altering its meaning. Working with the programmer Jon Pollard, Takahashi has produced a new and fully functioning online version of these platforms which undermines this dehumanising process. Reclaiming the initiative back from the software, Word Perhect presents an idiosyncratic hand drawn interface leading to a set of functioning but strangely altered tools.' It's fun & different so check it out.

Did you use the newsgroups at Deja like me, only to find you'd recently lost most of My/Your Deja? http://www.hotsheet.com
When you see this site you wonder why there aren't more like it around. It's basically a lot of lists of sites on one page. So by bookmarking this page you are saving yourself the job of bookmarking lots & lots of very useful sites. I've got loads of bookmarked sites in different folders but I usually only go to about 5% of them. If you're searching for a type of site, it's worth checking what they have here first. Very useful.

The Microsoft Knowledgebase was originally designed to be used by its own technicians to help resolve user problems. When solutions were found they were put on the site for all to benefit. Unfortunately it's got so big now that it's very difficult to find anything. Until now, that is! Get along to the Knowledgebase keyword page & bookmark it. Use it & it'll save you bags of time.

My Internet love is a corpse-hoarding granny

By Lucy Sherriff at The Register - 22.02.01

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/17117.html

Trevor Tasker's online romance went from steamy to chilly when he flew to the States to marry his love, only to discover that she was an old age pensioner with a corpse in her freezer.
Trevor, 27, met Wynema Shumate in a chat room, and exchanged electronic love notes with her for months. After she sent him photographs of herself in her smalls he decided to up-sticks to the States to be with her.
However, the photographs were taken over 35 years ago, and Trevor was met at the airport by a rather larger, and older woman than he expected. Shumate is now 65, and weighs in at an impressive 20 stone, according to a report in The Sun.
But fair play to Trevor, he was not to be deterred and resolved to stay for a holiday despite his shock.
But worse was to come, because Shumate had kept the dead body of her former flatmate, James O'Neill in her freezer, because she wanted to continue living in his house, and keep drawing money from his account.
O'Neill had died of natural causes, but Shumate had tried to cut off one of his legs in order to fit him in the freezer. She has since been sentenced to a year in jail for fraud and unlawfully removing a dead body.
Trevor has apparently vowed never to go online again. His mum said that he was very embarrassed about the whole affair.

They start off saying, on the front page, that they’re not as good as Goggle. But what Goggle can’t do & they can is give you a thumbnail of the sites it finds. This then gets you surfing quickly until you get what you’re after. Not the greatest search engine by any means but a taste of things to come.

http://www.google.com/options/buttons.html
This is a very welcome Christmas present from my favourite, incredibly quick, search engine Google. They are making searching even easier. Instead of going over to a search site to hunt down something you can do it straight from your links toolbar - IE or personal toolbar - Netscape.
To start with you need to put the feature on your toolbar. There's no downloading as it's only a bookmark & all you have to do is drag & drop from the site into the links section of your toolbar & there you have it! Now when you've got a page open all you have to do is highlight a word & Goggle will automatically give you a list of search results - from over one billion web pages. From there you go on to what you want. I searched for 'engine' & in 0.1 seconds it found 140.000.000 pages!
That's not all - when you go to another web page, click on the Google search & a search box will open, write in what you want, enter & it will show you every page that matches. You need x4 browsers plus for this to work.
There's also 'Google Scout' - which gives related sites to the page you're on & 'Google.com' - that takes you to their search home page. Magic. All is clearly & visually explained at the site. Slap it on!

A couple of newsletters ago I recommended the personal firewall from Zone Labs - Zone Alarm at http://www.zonealarm.com I've been very happy with it but I've heard about another free firewall. This is the 'Tiny Personal Firewall' from the computer company Tiny & seems to have all you need as well.

http://www.lavasoft.de/aaw/index.html
A firewall is supposed to make you invisible when you're surfing the net. Another function is that it tells you when a programme on your computer is 'phoning home' i.e. sending some information back to the programmer. This is usually harmless information but the trouble is you never really know. If you want to find the programmes that are trying to send information out - the 'spyware' - you could download Ad-Aware. This programme finds the spyware &, if you tell it to, deletes it for you too.

http://computingcentral.msn.com/help/howtodownload.asp
When I first started out with computers & the internet I was lucky to have Gerard to sort me out. There were times when I didn't know what I would have done without the advice. I very much sympathise with those starting out now without a 'Gerard' handy. For example, everyone is on about the latest download. Sounds great but how do you actually go about downloading a programme. The above address gives the newcomer an explanation on the different kinds of downloads.

http://www.downlinx.com
When you've sussed out the downloading situation, get on down to DownLinX & download all you need. You'll find over 40.000 programmes on their books under a dozen headings.

http://www.powerarchiver.com/
Another area of confusion is 'zipping'. I use the universally WinZip - http://www.winzip.com but now there is an alternative called Power Archiver & it's free, easy to use & contains just about everything that WinZip does. Worth investigating if you're after a compression programme.

http://www.wantedfonts.com/
'A modern culmination of unique fonts on the net', they say. And loads of links to other font sites.

Here's something to help you out when surfing the net. It's similar to Alexa & Netscape's 'What's related' but is much more sophisticated. You don't have to do any searches at all. It is installed at the top of you browser & goes into action when you open a page by giving you a series of related & categorised links. Unlike utilities like Copernic or Web Ferret or Search engines, you don't have to open anything up to make a search. What you might be looking for might be sitting right there. If not then carry out your normal search.
When I view the Developing Teachers.com site I'm given the following categories at the top of my browser: Teacher Training, English as a Second Language, Language Schools, Teacher Resources, Jobs, Student Resources & Online Resources. In each category there are up to 60 links given. It makes searching easy. The download for installation is very quick but unfortunately it only installs on Explorer.

http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/
Something else for your browser toolbar. WebMonkey, an excellent web building site, is giving away a toolbar that helps you have your favourites at your fingertips.

http://www.do-not-sleep.com
For those who are in need of ideas in the early hours of the morning. Lots of links aimed mainly at the geek.

Download your personal free firewall & remain invisible while connected. This little programme is getting a high profile everywhere on the net. It takes a few minutes to download & it's easy to install. As others try to get into your computer Zone Alarm blocks them & tells you when it does. If you want to feel a little safer & more anonymous then this is for you.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk
My father put me onto this. He's a Telegraph reader & every Thursday they have a Connected supplement with a column entitled Boot Camp. All of the back issues are on their Electronic Telegraph web site. Follow the links to the Connected section. The Boot Camp series is, as you might imagine, designed for the novice computer user in mind - it's all very clearly explained & with lots of information for the not so new computer user. Last time I looked they were on week 141! There's a lot more on the Telegraph site so have a hunt around while you're there.

http://www.absurd.org
Similar to http://snarg.net mentioned in the April edition of the newsletter. Not as interesting but maybe I didn't hang around long enough.

http://bigcats.care2.com/
The new 'donate with a click' site is about the big cats - a click gives a donation to the Wildlife Conservation Society - so you may as well get along & click on them all. - http://rainforest.care2.com/ - http://www.thehungersite.com/

http://www.purpleturtle.com/ And now you can help the turtle! Twenty percent of all advertising revenue goes towards turtle conservation. You can get yourname@purpleturtle.com e-mail here as well.

If you're lost on where to go here are a couple of useful sites.
Seen at the list of comedy sites at one of them:
The Pope and Queen Elizabeth were standing on a balcony beaming at thousands of people in the forecourt below. The Queen says to the Pope out of the corner of her mouth, "I bet you a tenner that I can make every English person in the crowd to go wild with just a wave of my hand." The Pope says, "No way. You can't do that!" The Queen says, "Watch this." So the Queen waves her hand and every English person in the crowd goes crazy, waving their little plastic Union Jacks on sticks and cheering, basically going ballistic. So the Pope is standing there going, "Uh-oh, what am I going to do? I never thought she'd be able to do it." So he thinks to himself for a minute and then he turns to her an says, "I bet you I can make every IRISH person in the crowd go wild, not just now, but for the rest of the week, with just one nod of my head." The Queen goes, "No way, it can't be done." So the Pope headbutts her.

http://www.dropthedebt.org
Here's another worthy site. This time it's devoted to trying to get the G7 countries to clear the Third World debt. On the site there's a video of rocksters such as Bono & Travis & to support the cause all you have to do is drop in on the Drop the Debt site and give them your e-mail address. This will then be sent to the G7 leaders in an attempt to create the largest petition ever. Don't worry about them passing on your address as they promise there will be no spam. 21st July is Net the Debt Day. It is being organised by http://www.jubilee2000uk.org/ so give them a visit too.

http://www.yukyuk.com
After the Drop the Debt site get along for a few laughs at the YukYuk site.

http://www.reflectdesign.com/bvfonts/
More fonts than you can cope with!

http://www.webbrain.com/
Now you see your search results with this new search engine called WebBrain, Netscape's Open Directory Project database. It gives you a picture of your search results as well as the traditional list. You can see your original search category while still becoming more specific, all in the form of a spider map. Much more interesting & the way search engines will go, they say.

A springboard for everything & anything to do with the Internet experience - impressive.

http://www.webwasher.de/en/software/wwash/download.htm
If you want to surf the web without banner ads & pop up windows then download the WebWasher. It's free, takes up less than 1Mb in size & is easy to install. It saves time as the ads aren't downloaded -it's white space instead - & how often do you actually click the banner ads?

http://www.bartleby.com   http://www.wolinskyweb.com
http://www.refdesk.com
For free reference sites these take the proverbial biscuit! You'll never need to go anywhere else. Check them all out to find one that suits! The Bartleby site especially is full of goodies - they say they are the "most comprehensive public reference library ever published on the web." The site is divided into four sections:

Reference - http://www.bartleby.com/reference/
Verse - http://www.bartleby.com/verse/

Among many more!
With these & http://www.britannica.com we're spoilt for choice.

http://www.urban75.com/Mag/bubble.html
I gave you a few time - wasting sites last month but this beats the lot. You know the parcel bubble wrapping that you can pop? Well, now you can do the same on the web - run the cursor over the bubbles & pop! And then they recharge so you can really waste some serious time! Not quite the same as the real thing though.

http://www.mamma.com
Called the mother of all search engines! It apparently accesses 4.2 million pageviews monthly. Check it out.

 http://www.raging.com
Another new search engine with a big future from AltaVista.

Bet you thought that the Net went on forever. Check out the very last page.

And if you've got some more time on your hands take a random trip to some quality web sites. All you do is choose a category & go with the flow.

http://www.emode.com/
And still even more time on your hands then get along to Emode for a quiz or two. Are you a sex goddess/god? What breed of dog are you? Are you a loony? What's your emotional age? All these & lots more crucial quizzes in Personality, Relationships Career & Health categories.

If you're just starting out with the Net & you're in need of information then these sites are for you - clear, very informative & lots of links.

http://snarg.net
If you're after something different on the net then you must check this out. You do need to let it run for quite a while & start mousing over the hot spots to find different routes that you can take. Not for those of a nervous disposition!

http://www.fontpool.com
Loads of fonts to add from the ones you got from Mashy mentioned in the February edition.

www.deja.com
A vast collection of newsgroups. My brother put me onto this after telling me how he got his Walkman mini-disk repaired free of charge after quoting to the manufacturer other similar cases he'd found in a newsgroup. So last week I thought I'd check it out for the scanner I'd promised myself for Xmas. The pros & cons were discussed - an Acer Scan Prisa 620 U by the way - & I felt happy going to buy it & haven't looked back since. It doesn't have to be computer related either - anything is discussed. Another similar site, considered better by some, is http://www.remarq.com

http://www.techweb.com/encyclopedia/home. , http://www.guru.net/ , http://www.pcwebopedia.com
After mentioning the http://www.whatis.com last month here are some more excellent dictionaries of computer terms all free. Check them out & find which one suits you.

2/00
www.mashy.com
Don't know about you but I like having many different fonts to choose from - the wackier & chunkier the better. Lockergnome recommended Mashy & quite rightly so. There are some original fonts from Mashy & loads of TTFs (True Type Fonts) - 1098 different ones when I was last there - all free & downloadable.

www.whatis.com
This & the next site come from Gerard's travels. This is a very useful site devoted to explaining the net & related topics with a dictionary of net terms at the top of each page.

www.symantec.com/avcenter/
An essential site to have under your favourites if the thought of a virus entering your computer worries you. When you find a virus, go to this site & enter the name in the search & you'll be told if it is genuine or a hoax & if it is genuine, & you have opened it, what to do about getting rid of it. A good free supplement to your anti-virus programme.

In response to the WebFerret I was talking about last time Nedra has sent this one. It lets you enter your query in real English (i.e. Where can I find information about English academies in Madrid?) & searches a number of other search engines, including www.metacrawler.com/ which in turn searches multiple engines, allowing you to define your search nicely (by phrase, keyword).
We have also found a worthy competitor to the Web Ferret I referred to in the last issue. It is again free, is called Copernic 2000 & you can download it from www.copernic.com It uses specialised engines for the search you want. On the free version you get to use six categories: the Web, E-mail Addresses, Newsgroups, Buy Books, Buy Hardware & Buy Software - & on the pay version for c.$40 you get 20+ categories. In order to download Copernic 2000 it might be an idea to first download Go!Zilla from www.gizmo.net , free again, & this programme enables you to download programmes safely without fearing a break in your connection as you simply go back to the site & continue - Go!Zilla has saved what you began.

For the Xmas sites mentioned above I used the WebFerret & it has made life much easier for general web searches. Write in 'Christmas' & this device queries all configured search engines simultaneously, discarding duplicate results (not always!) & gives you a list of 500 sites! It takes seconds to get results & then all you do is click in the list on the site you want to visit. No more laborious opening of the search engines.. You can download it for free from www.ferretsoft.com - There are pay versions of their products too. Slap it on your desktop.

A couple of lines about mailing lists. I was reading the other day about the dangers of signing up for different newsletters - not this one I hasten to add. We've all done it but if you haven't here's how to avoid a problem in your in-tray. When you're at a biggish web site, they offer you a list of areas to chose newsletters from & you opt for half a dozen. This may be asking for trouble. The less ethical companies use this as a way of getting mailing lists together which they then sell to all & sundry . You are then bombarded with loads of useless spam mail. And then when you're fed up with that & you try & get off the mailing lists, they ignore you. Or you get an email out of the blue from them & if you respond to say you want out they know it is an active address & sell it on again. Watch out there's spam about. (Now there's one for you - why is it called 'spam'? - all answers on the back of an email.
